How deep can a metal detector really go?

The honest answer, up front: for coin-sized targets, most quality metal detectors reliably detect 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) deep. Larger objects — a cache, a pipe, a chest — can be detected several feet down. And specialized deep-seeking or geolocating instruments claim much greater ranges, but those figures are manufacturer laboratory specifications, not a promise of what you will see in the field.

If a product page ever makes depth sound unconditional, be skeptical — including ours. That is why every depth figure on this site is labeled "manufacturer-stated."

Why depth is never one number

Detection depth depends on at least six variables working together, and any one of them can cut real-world depth in half:

  • Target size and orientation. A coin lying flat is much easier to detect than one on edge. A large relic can be found far deeper than a small ring.
  • Target material. Silver and copper conduct better and are detected deeper than gold or thin foil.
  • Soil mineralization. Iron-rich or wet-salt ground absorbs and distorts the signal. Heavily mineralized soil can halve depth.
  • Coil size. Bigger coils go deeper on large targets but lose sensitivity to small ones.
  • Time in the ground. A "halo" of oxidation around an old target can make it easier to detect; freshly buried test targets are usually harder.
  • Settings and skill. Ground balance, sensitivity, and sweep speed matter more than most people expect.

What each technology can realistically do

VLF (Very Low Frequency) — the standard for coin, jewelry, and relic hunting. Realistic depth: 6–12 inches on coins, 1–3 feet on large objects. Excellent discrimination, best for most hobbyists.

Pulse Induction (PI) — punches deeper in mineralized ground and salt beaches. Realistic depth: 12–18 inches on coins, several feet on large targets. Weak discrimination — you dig more trash.

What "manufacturer-stated" means on our product pages

When you see a depth or range figure in a FIELD READOUT panel on this site, it is the number published by the manufacturer, usually derived from controlled laboratory testing with large targets. We publish it because it is the only standardized figure available — and we label it clearly because your soil, your target, and your settings will produce different results. No honest retailer can promise you a specific depth.

How to actually get more depth from any detector

  • Ground balance properly — this is the single biggest depth unlock on mineralized soil.
  • Sweep slow and low, keeping the coil parallel to the ground.
  • Use headphones so you hear faint, deep signals.
  • Consider a larger coil for large deep targets, or go PI for beaches.
  • Dig the iffy signals — deep targets rarely sound perfect.

The bottom line

Match the tool to the mission: VLF for coins and jewelry, PI for beaches and bad ground, deep-seeking instruments for large targets at depth — with clear eyes about what manufacturer specifications do and don't promise.
