How it works

The River G's geophysical search system measures soil resistivity by passing a low-level electrical signal between probes inserted at set intervals in the ground. Each probe acts as an electrode, and the resistance values recorded across the probe array allow the main unit to infer the presence, character, and composition of underground water — distinguishing fresh water from saline water and identifying rock-layer boundaries. This is a well-established geophysical technique (electrical resistivity tomography) used in professional hydrogeological surveys worldwide. The probes are the critical field interface for this measurement: worn, damaged, or incompatible probes introduce noise into the resistivity readings, which is why using the correct factory-matched set matters for reliable results.
