What metal detector should a beginner buy?

Gold detection
Can a metal detector find gold?
Yes, metal detectors can detect metallic gold when the target and detector technology are compatible. Small natural nuggets require a very different search problem from larger buried metal objects.
What type of detector is best for gold?
For small natural nuggets, gold-focused VLF or pulse-induction detectors are common starting points. Long-range and 3D systems are different categories and should be chosen only when their workflow matches the project.
How deep can a gold detector detect?

What is a long-range gold detector?
A long-range detector is a specialist directional system marketed for broader-area reconnaissance. It is not the same as a conventional VLF or pulse-induction detector swept over the ground.

3D ground scanners
What is a 3D ground scanner?
A 3D ground scanner is a specialist system designed to collect subsurface readings across a scan area and display anomalies or visualized data. Exact sensing methods vary by manufacturer and model.
Is a 3D ground scanner the same as ground-penetrating radar?
No. Do not assume every product sold as a 3D ground scanner is GPR. The sensor technology and operating method must be checked for the exact model.
Can a 3D scanner identify exactly what is underground?
Not reliably in every case. Visualizations can show anomalies or model-specific interpretations, but they should not be treated as guaranteed identification of an object's exact composition, shape or depth.
How much does a 3D ground scanner cost?

VLF and pulse induction
What is a VLF metal detector?
VLF stands for very low frequency. VLF detectors are conventional coil-based systems commonly used for coins, jewelry, relics and some gold applications.
What is a pulse-induction metal detector?
Pulse-induction detectors transmit short electrical pulses through the search coil and evaluate target response. They are often considered for mineralized ground, salt environments and certain prospecting conditions.
Is pulse induction better than VLF?

Depth and performance
How deep can a metal detector go?
Depth depends heavily on target size and detector technology. Large metal objects can be detected much deeper than small coins or nuggets. Any meaningful claim must specify the target, soil, coil or sensor and test conditions.
Does a larger coil detect deeper?
A larger coil may improve response on larger or deeper targets and increase ground coverage, but it can be heavier and may reduce separation in trash-heavy ground. It does not add a fixed number of inches in every site.
Does wet ground improve metal detecting?
Sometimes. Moisture can change conductivity and target response, but the effect depends on soil composition, salinity and detector settings. Saltwater environments can also create difficult ground conditions.
Why does mineralized soil affect detectors?
Minerals in the ground can create a strong background response that competes with the signal from a target. Ground balance and suitable detector technology help manage this effect.
Diamond and gemstone detectors
Can a normal metal detector detect a diamond?
A conventional metal detector does not detect a diamond itself as metal because diamond is not metallic. Specialist products may be manufacturer-positioned for gemstone-search applications using other methods.
What should I check before buying a diamond detector?

Waterproof and beach detectors
Is a waterproof coil the same as a waterproof detector?
No. A detector can have a waterproof search coil while the control box is not submersible. Verify the exact product's water rating before entering the water.
